Opa-locka Thoroughbreds
(This page under construction, more coming including photos)
Opa-locka is one of the Curtiss-Bright Cities developed by Glenn Curtiss and James Bright. For a history of the Curtiss-Bright cities, see The Curtiss-Bright Cities Hialeah, Miami Springs, & Opa Locka by Seth H. Bramson, a wonderful paperback with lots of photos, available for $4.00 from Amazon. For a very thorough history of Opa-locka download a copy of A Dream of Araby, (121 pages), available online courtesy of the State University System of Florida. You can download a copy from my file server here.
Opa-locka didn't have its own high school so students were bused to Hialeah High School home of the "Thoroughbreds," so named because of the City of Hialeah's famous racetrack. [Today, the Hialeah/Miami Lakes Senior High School (home of the Trojans) which was opened in 1971 serves Opa-locka.] If you lived in Opa-locka and attended Hialeah High School (or lived in adjacent areas such as Golden Glades and Carol City and rode to school with Opa-locka schoolmates) you are an Opa-locka Thoroughbred. I am attempting to identify and compile a list all Opa-locka Thoroughbreds.
The late Don Boyd (Hialeah High Class of 1965) posted a gallery of Opa-locka historical photos at:
