Newspaper clipping [Nabb accession #1988.01.035.01.14] "Pioneer Tell Tales of Selbyville... Late David J. Long story reprinted telling history of community from Selby to Selbyville: It was Sandy Branch until 1840." Editor's [George Spicer]Note: reprint of article written by D.J.Long in Berlin Times Aug 22, 1930. 152 YEARS AGO [1778], SANDY BRANCH, SUSSEX COUNTY, DELAWARE, WAS SETTLED BY A GROUP OF PIONEERS, NAMELY BENJAMIN LONG, ARTHUR MCCABE, JOHN MURRAY RUBAN(REUBEN) STEVENS AND ELI CAMPBELL, AND PART OF THE LAND ON WHICH STAND THE PRESENT TOWN OF SELBYVILLE IS SILL OWNED BY THEIR DESCENDENTS TO THE FOUTH AND FIFTH GENERATION. ..... THE TOWN OF SELBYVILLE ITSELF, NOW STANDS ON THE LAND ONCE OWNED BY THE PIONEER ARTHUR MCCABE, SANDY BRANCH HAVING BEEN A TRACT OF LAND CONTAINING ABOUT 250 ACRES WHICH IS INCORPORATED IN THE PRESENT TOWN. THE LAND WAS DIVIDED AMONG MCCABE'S 3 SONS: "W.S.[William Showell] McCabe's share was on the east side of the old Indian trail of King's Highway as it was called when this country was ruled by the King of England. That road is now Main St. in Selbyville. the 2nd son, AMOS McCabe's share was on the west side of the same street, and the 3rd son, JOHN D. had part on each [side] of the railroad [to come]." Article goes on to say, "W.S.McCabe had the smallest portion of land and his father started him in a county store abt. 1850....this business continued until 1867." Comments: 1. The land was divided among McCabe's 3 sons: [This McCabe was not Arthur, but his son Garretson, see LWTs of both in other documents in this folder] 2. Did Arthur's acreage total 250? or Did Garretson's acreage total 250 (some/all? inherited from father Arthur) or Was the total acreage incorporated in 1901 as Selbyville 250 acres? 3. On this site we show Arthur holding 50A of Mumford's Choice, 37.25A of Long Lott which he sold to son Isaac, unspecified acreage surrounding Long Lott on w and s, and unspecified acreage in sawmill and gristmill, although some of this could have been in Long Lott.
