Revision of pt. of article I published "Some of Those Elusive Hudsons of Sussex Co. DE" in HFA Bulletin 153, Mar 20/12, p17-19

Original article, Part 2, p19: "Who are Aydelott and Richard Hudson, “grandsons” in the Sussex DE will of John Coffan? [Calendar of Sussex County DE. Probate Records: 1680-1800. Will of John Coffan, 1776]
Wife Comfort; sons Cornelius, Abner, William, Thomas; dau Mary Chester;  grandsons Aydelott and Richard Hudson; wit: Andrew Williams, William Woodcraft and John Midecap.

Grandson Aydelott m Mary Atkins before the 1796 will of her aunt Arcada "Adah" Robinson Boyd where they are both named. Richard would be his brother.
A common practice in writing wills of the period was to name grandchildren in the place of their deceased parent. Thus in interpreting John Coffan's will it can be assumed that the mother of Aydelott & Richard Hudson was a dec'd dau of John Coffan who had married the Hudson father of Aydelott& Richard.

REVISION: I believe now that the father was SELBY HUDSON b bet 1735-1742 of Richard Jr & Mary Aydelott and that Selby named his sons Aydelott and Richard after his parents.  (The original article speculated that father was John Aydelott Hudson of Hezekiah; the other info, wife Elizabeth, and children Joice, Prudence and Seth stands.) 

Selby Hudson was brother to John Aydelott Hudson (the elder) who d without issue. [Abstracts by Vernon Skinner, Prerogative Court of Wor. Co. MD, June 6 1753 Estate of John Aydelott Hudson Account by Arthur Lathbury shows distribution to siblings including Selby.] 
Selby died bet 1782 and 1790[1782 Baltimore Hd., Sussex DE Tax List but not in Leon de Valinger Jr.'s 1790 Reconstructed Census of Delaware].

Son AYDELLOT Hudson appears in the 1800 Baltimore Hd., Sussex Co. DE census (Ancestry transcription as 'Ay Hott Hudson') and apparently died before the 1830 Sx Census. 

For son RICHARD Hudson, nothing has been found in DE records to prove that he lived after the 1776 will of his grandfather John Coffan. But, in Wor. Co. MD there was a marriage license on 10 Mar 1800 for a Richard Hutson and Polly Collins [Worcester Co. MD Marriage Licenses. 1795-1865 by Mary Beth and Vanessa Long]. This couple is probably the one listed on the 1800 Bogerternorton Hd., Wor census as 26-44 with 1 male child, living beside Mary Collins. This Richard apparently d bef 1810; the Polly found in the 1810 Wor.census is not his widow as stated by Millard Hudson. This Polly Hudson was most likely the widow of John with son Leonard living next door. It is also possible that the above marriage record isn't for Richard b DE of Selby but for one of the other Richards b MD. Millard Hudson has a theory in his writings but he did not cite sources and the above re Polly reveals that he did not look carefully at all available facts.
