Selbyville's annual Old Timer's Day features classic cars, live entertainment and other exhibitions. Written by Earl Holland, The Daily Times | delmarvanow, 16 Jun 2011 SELBYVILLE -- The streets of downtown Selbyville will soon be filled with classic cars, music and other exhibitions as a longtime tradition returns for its 55th year. The town will host its annual Old Timer's Day festivities Saturday on Church Street. The one-day event, which will also feature an emergency vehicle and tractor show, was established in the mid-1950s. "It started as a three-day weekend sale for the stores in the downtown area," said Robert Reed, event chairman. "What they would do is put their merchandise on the streets and it would be a way to draw in visitors. They would dress up in colonial-period costumes as well. Of course, things have changed since then and they don't do the costumes anymore." There will be live entertainment from The Glass Onion Band and DJs, games and rides. In addition, there will be a 50-50 raffle and door prizes. The money raised from the drawing will help fund next year's Old Timer's Day. Preparation begins at the start of the year. Reed said last month has been about getting the final details set, including advertisements. One of the highlights will be a classic car show. Registration is from 9 a.m.-noon and is free. Reed said the first-place winner will receive the Mayor's Choice Award, which includes a plaque and a $100 prize. The Top 30 cars will also receive trophies. Reed said there's a lot of interest in the car show. "Usually we estimate a couple of thousand to be in the town, but we normally have 300 cars in the car show," he said. "It's not a money-maker, but its one of the few free car shows in the area." Call: 302-436-8314 Web: www.townofselbyville.com
