One thing I would like to mention in connection with the flurry of good recipes is the improtance of food at community events. Those social halls that are at local churches were built for people to eat in. Traditionally our churches held "church suppers" with slippery dumplings and other good things, and "ice cream socials", as well as other affairs where people either bought tickets or paid at the door to participate. The idea was to get up funds for such things as new hymnals or other needs. Then there were the annual Sunday School picnics with their covered dishes, and the camp meetings. They didn't just go to them for the preaching. It was the "butter beans and corn". Let's not forget the volunteer fire department which for many years held Friday night "arster fritters in sandwich bread" sales to get up funds for needed equipment. Maybe they still do. And even though the Delmarva Chicken Festival was never held in Selbyville, our community was part of it. The fire department truck was in the parade right along with our lovely girls. And afterward everyone streamed to the Big Frying Pan to get some of Pete Richardson's fried chicken. And what would any event nowadays be without going to Doyles for dumplings? Ken, Nina Lou wrote a message about the year the Delmarva chicken Festival WAS held in Selbyville. Also, Doyles is a "new" restaurant, "new" as in after 1950. But it's predecessor Woody's Diner was serving chicken and dumplings in 1954 and I suspect from its beginning. Marj
