John Jones (d. 1798) of Baltimore Hundred was a member of the House of Assembly in 
1776, of the Legislative Council in 1777, and of the Delaware convention that 
ratified the federal constitution in 1787. He was one of ten persons from Sussex 
County who were rejected for membership in the constitutional convention of 1776. 
He served as a Lieutenant-Colonel and Colonel in the local militia and was 
President of the Sussex County Council of Safety. He later became a member of the 
Supreme Court and of the Court of Oyer and Terminer. He owned UNITY GROVE, a 
plantation of 1,000 acres, as well as several large tracts of land. His assessment 
rate in 1785 amounted to £22. An inventor of a mowing machine and a manure 
spreader, he corresponded with officials of the American Philosophical society 
about these agricultural improvements and became a member of that society. In 1776 
he persuaded the General Assembly to advance him the sum of £1,000 for the 
construction of a saltworks along the coast, but the project was never completed,

4 Deeds of mortgage. The first reads: 13 Aug 1785 Daniel Rundle, Jacob 
Shoemaker and Richard Footman, all of Philadelphia from John Jones Suss Esqr 
and Mary his wife. Whereas John Jones stands bound for 1200 pounds, for the 
conveyance of the 3/4 parts of that land in Suss called "Unity Grove" beginning 
on the w side of a county road from Snow Hill to Lewes Town, on n side of a 
Sandy Beach(sic;Sandy Branch?)issuing out of the head of St. Martin's River 
near Uriah Brookfield's Bridge, 2160 acres Wit: john Foster, David Miller, 
Meirs Fisher. Ackn 7 Feb 1786.
